WIndows 7

I got my upgrade via the win741.com offer for students.  They're pretty smart.  Make it a token price and students will go legit.  Now people like adobe need to take note and make programs like photoshop $30-50 instead of $200 like it is.

SO I downloaded yesterday.  I had to buy an external hard drive to backup since my old one died.  I was "downgrading" from Vista Ultimate to 7 Pro.  The install worked fine.  Apparently if you're going from 32-bit to 64-bit the installer chokes.  It needs a 64-bit decompiler that 32-bit systems don't have.  Fine for me... I went 64-bit a while ago as many should.

Well...

-The size!  I was peeved at the install size because with my TV tuner it needs space to record.  It's nearly 3GB a episode so it adds up fast.  Despite not being a "direct upgrade" it saved all my program files and user data in the C:\Windows.old directory.  Over 120GB of data I didn't need!!!  The upside is I really didn't need to put it all on my external, but the idea is a bit odd.  The only thing that really got nuked by the install was my programs so why keep the files?

NON-EDIT: 109GB with adobe products installed.  So a sub 100GB install is pretty good!  Beats the pants off Vista.

-Features... pretty snazzy.  Macs have nothing over this.  Sorry, Carlos.  I honestly don't get the hype over pinning stuff... yes, it's Mac like, but it's just the old quick launch bar... but bigger?!?!  I do like the sticky notes app and ability to nativly crop screen captures.

-Background can now rotate between a set you pick!  Neat as hell.  I'm going to have to get a picture set to work with that.

-Media Center has little tweaks I like.  Now you see program pictures and details as you use the guide.  NICE.  Working well there.

Can't think of much else...

9:31 pm - I haven't been this frustrated in a while
I haven't been this frustrated in a while with my friends.

Today had moments of real suck that brought me down.  Unrelated little stuff had me down and I took a nap to get it off my shoulders.  It had brought itself back up with some time with the roommate.  Well...

This past Friday spontaneously Noah asked if he could come over to our place and some others.  We'd hang and look at a slideshow of his recent trip to Costa Rica.  Cool... people came it was six of us in total including the roomie.

All was going well.  One of the girls is one I've referred to before.  I'm REALLY attracted to her.  Physically and personallity.  I let Noah know that once and I assumed he was subtly trying to let us have some time together by inviting her.  She suggested to us to go to Mochi, a new frozen yogurt place.

UMMMM, yes please!  I wanted more time with her.  Until Noah says he's to tired and needs to get home.  Fine, valid.  Lauren, girl in question, asks me if that fine that we don't go.  I said, "Alright, that's fine."  I didn't want to say something stupid or appear to eager to be just with her.  That's my tendency to come on strong and I'm more aware of it now.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Noah proceeds to futz for half an hour on the guitar.  Alright that alone pisses me off.  He wet blanketed the deal and really didn't have to get home.

THEN to top it off:  After they left I noticed they were talking as a group in our driveway for a long time.  Turns out I learn via facebook walls that they did end up going to Mochi, DESPITE being in my FUCKIN' DRIVEWAY DISCUSSING IT, Noah saying he needed to get home and not wanting to spend money.

HORSESHIT!!!  It doesn't apply totally since that's not my intent at all, but what a major "cock block".  Noah is naturally good looking and likeable.  It's already a burden to be associated with him because most know me through him... girls love the guy.

I'm pissed at Noah and Lauren.  I went out of my way to let her know I wanted a rain check....

11:32 pm - Two reviews...
I've had things I've been trying and mulling over.

First the more interesting to others.  I've packed my desktop away in anticipation of moving.  So I'm on my laptop.  Firefox wasn't configured like my desktop so I figured I'd give Google Chrome a whirl.

So far I like many things---

Likes:
-It's snappy as ever.  It loads fast and doesn't seem to memory hog, but it also doesn't cache as much I've noticed.

Give and Takes:
-Minimalistic, which is aesthetically pleasing.  There is little to configure though.  I can't for example change pop-up settings.  The portal for financial aid and records of my uni, has pop-ups and the controls are so limited that I couldn't allow.  It simply disallows all.
-Search bar.  I like how it can grab the sites with a partial name.  It makes getting to an infrequently visited but common site quick.  Like I mentioned it doesn't cache much.  It relies on the speed dial aspect a lot and if you go to a site with medium frequency and it's not a well known site it might be more difficult to get to.

Cons:
-Plain doesn't render some pages.  That's probably more an IE fault, but firefox does this well so it's a con.
-Has done some wierd backtracking, especially on facebook.  BIG con to me that it will skip pages and I have to manually renavigate back or forward.  It seems to be random and not related to a specific feature of a site.

---------------------------

HK P7

I'm really happy with it.  The holster wear isn't bad and the internals are great.  It must have been worn lots, but shot little.

Likes:
-Has a fixed barrel.  It's low to the grip so recoil is SWEET.  It has the least muzzle flip of any gun I've shot.
-Single action trigger is great.  The "creep" is less than my P30.
-Points SO naturally.  This alone has instantly made me confident in carrying it.

Washouts:
-Weight: Loaded it's more than my P30.  That helps with recoil and sturdyness, but obviously means I'll need a strong belt.
-Squeeze cocker:  I'm totally fine with it, but I imagine for some it'd be a turn-off.  It's heavy to initially cock.  Makes it the safest gun ever IMO though.

Con:
-Heats up due to the gas system.  After 50 rounds it was a bit uncomfortable to hold.  Also makes it dirtier than other pistols.  After 50 rounds I don't care about cleaning my P30.  For the P7 I made sure to clean the gas piston and feed ramps for my peace of mind.

Now that I'm set on pistols I'll be accesory shopping and paying for the CC permit.  I need holsters and will probably get a light for my P30.

2:47 pm - Griffin RoadTrip
Well, fuck prices, but at least I got it on birthday money... $90.

Carlos didn't respond timely, so agonized over which to buy in the FM transmitter department.  Both the top Belkin and Griffin tuners were the same price.  I needed FM not Aux, though both had the option of either.

The Belkin looked more secure as it wrapped the sides.  The Griffin only holds the bottom.  I liked the Griffin's looks more.

THEN I remembered why I was getting one and that I'd only owned Belkins and they BLEW!!!  Weak transmitting all the time.

So Griffin it was.  Turns out being on the bottom was okay.  It's secure enough and I just slide the bottom of my case off.  (I have a semi-hard case only)  It was able to snake around right next to my wheel and away from my shifter.

THE GREAT!  It scans the channels.  I thought it was going to be shit because the first choice after I'd scanned was right next to a station.  Who knew... LOAD and CLEAR.  So if nothing else I was set and would have been satisfied if that's all it had done.

The extra:
-Keeps screen unlocked so that I don't have to click, unlock, etc... just touch.  Very nice!
-Buttons work... that would have detracted if they hadn't.
-I didn't realized until I got home that the ID3 tag info was displayed on my radio!  Not the transmitter but my car radio.  That blew me away.  I have no clue if the Belkin would have done that, but hell if I care that's cool.

Mr. Arango,

Any plans the 22nd-28th?  I'll likely be in Cooper City then over that span or similar.  I'm going to be home because the momma is having her thyroid surgery the 24th.

I think they'll be keeping her in for a night (24th) so maybe Transformers?

Dear Mr. Arango,

Rather than pretend others care about my gun related posts I address this to you.  LJ is probably the more efficient system for discussion also.

So... I was mulling through the wants and could haves in my mind.  Some practical and many just plain down the road many years.

I was thinking of what next?  My CCW permit will take a few months.  So in the means time I'm wondering.

First, I'll discuss a concealable gun vs. a shotgun.

Shotgun Pros:
-Cheaper as a whole
-Agreed upon as the best defense weapon
-Useful for clays and skeet should I want to
-No wait.  I could walk out the damn store with one.

Shotgun Cons:
-Unless I go for clays I'd have very little use for it.  There isn't a range that allows both pistols and long guns around here.

Concealable Pistol Pros:
-I'd have it ready for my permit.
-Could keep same ammo for both my pistols.

Cons:
-More expensive choice.
-Wait period until I have my CCW permit.

So how weight you, Mr. Arango?  Shotgun or pistol?

Personally my choices so far are for a shotgun: A Saiga 12ga. (AK design, and mostly because it's hi-capacity gets me going) or the trusty stand-by of a Remington 870.  For a Pistol I'm more in a bind.  After holding so many I want a single stack.  I'm leary of a traditional Sig gun since I couldn't hit shit with the P6 I tried and other than the HK P7 which is out of production I feel like there isn't much for me.

In other gun stuff bullpup's really intrigue me.  Bushmaster M17 and Kel-Tec RFB I've been watching vids of.  There's also the Walther G22 which is far more realistic since I don't hunt and in SHTF scenario I'd have a shotgun first.

1:32 am - Porter danced, the end of the world is at hand.
Went to FCA's Semi-formal... believe it or not I danced.  Some, not the whole time.  It is progress and times are changing. :)

It helps that there is an abundance of inredibly nice and drop dead gorgeous girls to prod a man onto the floor.

I'm embarking on a new level of geekdom...

I broke down on two fronts.
1) My EEE... i got tired of no wireless in my dorm because ASUS couldn't be bothered to update their drivers.  Plus I didn't want to compile it.  Same with Flash... it's inexcusable to not have an update firefox so that I can't get flash on it.  So I blew them off and loaded EEEbuntu.  More penguin action, but less of a simplified OS.  Much better.
2) I realized I'd lost my USB needed to boot my dell laptop and hadn't honestly used it in about a month.  So I'm installing Xubuntu now.  I still have the original XP install disk so I could always fall back to that.

Two LINUX computers... quite nerdy.  I'm still not a command line only guy, but it is quite the nerdy thing.

In the vein of Carlos' post...

Here's a list of old (canceled or finished) shows I've watched in entirety:

The Wonder Years (at least what's available)
Dark Angel
Firefly
Surface
Witchblade
The 4400

I would like to find some old Nick ones too like Rocko's Modern Life.  I've seen all of a few other current shows too...

If Sarah Conner Chronicles gets canceled I'm going to flip a shit.  It's so awesome right now.  How they killed Derek was the best way I've seen a main character go.  No drama, totally believable and shocking.

------------------------------------------

Gun want's list in rough order of want:
1) Saiga 12- Shotgun is the most practical for the next "defense" gun.  It's an AK and can get 20rd drums.  Yes, I would contribute to the statistic and grab parts that could be banned.  20 rounds of 12ga would be crazy.
2a) Ruger 10/22- .22lr gun.  Is the honda civic of the rifle world and can be modded out the bumhole.  I like projects and this could be one.
2b) HK P7- I got to handle one and I really like it.  It's slim.  Beats all the modern compacts I know of.  It's rock solid safe too.  I'd like to grab one before they get too scarce.

8:05 am - Gun Show
I went to a gun show out at Newberry that is maybe 20-30 minutes west of Gainesville.  I knew it'd be small but I was quite satisfied with the experience.

I took the CWP class they offered.  $40... bargain!  I just have to get the app notarized and pictures.  Then $117 with my finger prints to the state of Florida.

I got to see many guns I'd been wanting to see.

Saiga 12 shotgun- I want.  For Russian made it felt solid and looked damn good next to anything else.  20 round drums too!
Walther P99- Felt alright but I done feel it hold well next to other guns.  Universally the ambi mag releases on guns blow next to the new HK ones like on mine.  Their stiff and short.
Revolvers- Held many since I've never really shot them.  Some are funky as hell, but a 3" seem to be an alright weight.  Still not attracted to them right now.  Maybe someday just so I can shoot .357 Magnum.
10/22- Really this is the only rifle I think I've been interested in.  Like AR's it's "the" project gun with upgrades for everything.  Ammo is cheap for .22lr.  I don't hunt so it's just fun for a long gun fix for putting holes in paper.
HK USP- Don't like the safety, but felt pretty good.  Very big next to other "standard" sized guns.  If that's what was HK now I'd probably have passed to something like the XD-M.
HK P7- I'm getting one... despite the "ugly", it's slim as heck and as safe as they get.  I want one for carry.

Quick NYC thoughts...

-Every once and a while you get a mice whiff of decay/death.  It makes you want to hurl, until it's gone a second later.
-Fuck walking.  Even with the subways I was tired of it.
-Being as it was cold I observed fashion.  Girls, wear calf to knee high leather boots and you will automatically look hotter.  It's just damn sexy.
-Harlem wasn't dangerous.  I'm more afraid of the Opa Locka and going down the wrong street than I was coming back late to my hostel.
-Lane lines are merely suggestions when driving.
-Shopping was fun.  I want an H&M here NOW!  I imagine girls would go ape shit trying dresses on because there were so many little designer shops where I thought just on the mannequin the dresses were haute.

Carlos, I was handing out fliers at Turlington Plaza and Andrea walked right past me without batting an eye.  I think I did hurt her with the mayo comment. :)  I digress though... she's gotten skinny.  Lost a lot of that baby fat and is very lean when she wears heels.

REAL NEWS!!!

I got my gun!  Picked it up and spent some time at the range with it.  I'm beyond happy.

I talked to the gunshop next door and they only had 115gr.  We commiserated on the market.  I had some 115gr I got from Wal-mart but they were LOW.  He basically said what I'd heard that the market is so hard now.  He hadn't had 124gr in a few months (I wanted 124gr to break in the gun as it's designed for NATO spec ammo which is 124gr).

I ran the 115gr and it was fine.  My friend Noah had some failure to feeds and one to eject but I suspect that since it only occured with him that the issue was he limp wristed.

I got all my cleaning supplies. :)  I took the gunshop guys advice and I ordered 500 rounds of NATO spec ammo that I managed to find in stock.  I also got a mag loader.

I guess the real take home point is: Me + Carlos + Markham Park + x, where x = a weekend in the (near) future.

5:08 pm - Last rental at the gun range for a while. :-)
I went to the range with my friend Ryan.  I'm trying to organize a larger group from my SmallGroup (sounds weird but correct).  Ryan wasn't going to be able to make next weekend and I wasn't about to turn down the opportunity. :-)

We shot a Springfield XDM.  It was new and I knew it was different from the plain XD we'd shot at Doral.  I liked it... all the glock pushers can seriously shove it.  Between the S&W M&P and the XDM giving the "buy a glock" response is like telling people to but one size fits all underwear.  Seriously I'm going to kick anyone who says that in the nuts!

The XDm was great.  The trigger was like the M&P more than the XD me and Carlos shot.  It had a clean break.  The real impressive thing to me was the feel and capacity.  It got rid of the blocky feel of the XD and looked a heck of a lot like the Walther P99 I've yet to try.  It felt good.  The capacity was nuts... 19 freakin' rounds.

I think I'd have to try the M&P back to back to declare a winner, but for full size striker fired guns it was great in my book.  <--- Give it a thought Mr. Arango if you ever go that route.

Well, we were on our way out.  Yacking with the workers after paying.  My friend Ryan had a great time so we were extra talkative.  He told us to give the display case a look...

HOLY SNITZEL!!!  They had a P30L in the case.  I immeadiately called that baby out and fondled it.  The price was as good as I was seeing online so I decided to lay my money down. :-)

I OWN AN HK P30L!!!  I'm getting it next Saturday and I'm looking up accessories to buy.  Speedloader and snap caps probably and the stuff to clean the gun.

Here's what my baby looks like:

Dollhouse?  Anyone else watch?

It's too early to tell IMO...

Apparently the original pilot was totally scrapped.  I hope it's not a Firefly where they bubble it and the show ends up being on my shelf on DVD.  "Train Job" sucked as a pilot, but FOX felt it was better.... FOX knows nothing,

Much to think of lately here's a care free idea though...

When I was in Gatlinburg at a panel discussion one kid brought up his tattoos from before he was saved. A panel member said he thought tattoos were fine and that his testimony was partly written on him because of them.

He then said he always thought it would be cool to have the Shema tattooed on your hand.

The Shema is:
"Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God! The LORD is One!"

and in synogouge services they recite the full passage (Deuteronomy 6:5-9) that later says:
"You shall bind them as a sign on your hand"

Them being the words. Pretty cool idea!!!

So I researched it and was thinking of getting the greek paraphrase by Paul (1 Corinthians 8:6) as a tattoo:

ἀλλ᾿ ἡμῖν εἷς θεὸς ὁ πατὴρ ἐξ οὗ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ εἷς κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς δι᾿ οὗ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς δι᾿ αὐτοῦ

"yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist."

The original Hebrew Shema is pretty cool looking too.

שמע ישראל יהוה אלהינו יהוה אחד

Quick post because I have to change and eat...

SHE LOVED IT!

EDIT:
She was doing the alter call so I sat back and waited for her to be done. I was patient I just read a little. When she was done she walked to me.

She said, "That better not be for me." I was holding the present wrapped in some craft paper.
"It is."

She tore into it. She was amazed at the effort I put into it. I had made a box for it that came apart. In the top I made a slot to slide the card into. After reading the card she was a little puzzled to what it could be...

When she opened it she yelled, "I can't believe you remembered!"

:) She totally remembered saying that she wanted one and hadn't gotten one yet. I QUOTE, "You win. You made my birthday."

Holy shit, :) isn't even close. I'm going to pray more because we talked more and she said she'd been meaning to talk to me about life. I'm so pumped right now!

Oh man has this been a difficulty but I've been planning the most thoughtful gifts ever for me.

Back at the beginning of the school year when I went to the John Mayer concert it was with a group. It was the hometown of one of the girls, so we were at her place. We went to her church and apparently one of the other girls had never been to an older more conservative church. When we sat down she immediately went for the hymnal. She burst out, "Oh my gosh, can I have one of these for my birthday!"

Me being me, chuckled and kidded with her, but I didn't forget it. I checked facebook for her birthday and wondered how I would pull it off. Would I have to buy one? If so which one? etc...

Then perfectly this winter break I went to my Dad's place. His wife was still clearing out some of his old stuff and among the bag she gave me was his old hymnal! It was a leather one he'd ordered specially for when he led the choir. Leather, gold siding, etc... PERFECT!

So, despite the personal touch of giving my Dad's hymnal I made the most awesome card. It took me a long time but I inked it all myself. Her "about me" on facebook says, "I'm the one curly fry in the box of regular." I think that's her exactly and joke about it all the time with her.

So the inner part of the card has a drawing of a box of fries with one curly. Around the drawing it says "No need for ketchup, this one is already special."

When I think about this gift, I feel like a kid with downs smiling. :)
